Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin: reading eye-supplement labels
Published Nov 1, 2026 · Vilorra

Eye-health supplements often name the same three ingredients: lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin. These are carotenoids, the pigments found in the macula, the central part of the retina. Here is how the four formulas in our Eye Health category describe themselves.
The four formulas, by their listings
| Product | Carotenoids named | Form and count |
|---|---|---|
| MacuHealth Triple Carotenoid Formula | Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin | Count not confirmed |
| MacuShield Original Plus | Meso-zeaxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin | Capsules, 90-day pack |
| 1MD Nutrition VisionMD | CARMIS lutein and zeaxanthin | 30 softgels |
| EyePromise Restore | Zeaxanthin and lutein | 60 softgels, listed as a 30-day supply |
What to compare
- Which carotenoids. Two of the four name all three. The other two name lutein and zeaxanthin.
- Amounts per serving. None of these listings states milligram amounts, so check the Supplement Facts image on the retailer's page.
- Supply. Count and serving size together tell you how long a pack lasts.
A note on screens
Several listings mention screen use. Supplements are not a replacement for eye exams, breaks from screens or the advice of your eye doctor.
